Origin Story

Kenya Nyeri

Altitude: 1,600–1,900mProcess: Washed (Kenya Double Wash)Variety: SL-28, SL-34

Blackcurrant, grapefruit, brown sugar

Kenyan coffee from Nyeri is the electric guitar of the coffee world. Where Ethiopian coffees are floral and delicate, and Indonesian coffees are deep and earthy, Kenyan coffees from Nyeri hit you with bright, assertive fruit that feels almost juicy. It's coffee that demands your attention.

The region

Nyeri County sits in Kenya's Central Highlands, on the slopes of Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Range. The volcanic red soil is rich in phosphorus and other minerals that contribute directly to the intensity of the cup. Coffee here is grown between 1,600 and 1,900 meters, where cool nights slow the cherry maturation and concentrate sugars in the fruit.

SL-28 and SL-34: the varieties that changed everything

Kenya's coffee identity was shaped by Scott Laboratories (hence “SL”) in the 1930s. SL-28, developed from a drought-resistant Tanganyika variety, produces extraordinary cup quality with deep fruit complexity. SL-34, adapted from French Mission bourbon, adds body and sweetness. Together, they produce a cup profile that is unmistakably Kenyan — bright, complex, and wildly fruity.

The Kenya double wash

Kenya's processing is meticulous. After pulping, the beans are fermented, washed, then fermented and washed again — the “Kenya double wash.” This extra step removes every trace of mucilage and produces a cup of almost supernatural clarity. You taste the bean itself, unmasked by processing artifacts. The result is precision — every tasting note rings clear like a bell.

In the cup

Nyeri coffees are wines in disguise. The blackcurrant note is the signature — it's so vivid that first-timers sometimes think the coffee has been flavored. It hasn't. That's just what happens when SL-28 beans grow in volcanic soil at altitude and get processed with this level of care. Behind the blackcurrant, you'll find grapefruit brightness, a brown sugar sweetness, and a finish that lingers for minutes.

Brew it as a pour-over. This is a coffee that needs clarity of method to match its clarity of flavor. V60, medium-fine grind, 200°F, 1:16 ratio. Don't add milk — you'll bury the fireworks.
